Hi faithful readers, just a quick note to let you know I’m still well and alive although I must apologize for the very long time away from updating with new posts. 2 major reasons for my disappearance: 1) HTC taking ages to release 2.1 for HTC Hero (hence I got pissed and neglected my HTC) and 2) I bought a new Blackberry Bold 2 and have been using it. But not to worry, both system have their hits and misses, and I will continue to update.

Today’s update is not an original post that I wrote up but nonetheless a good one. It’s a switcher’s guide from iPhone to Android. Hold the gasping but yes, there are people deflecting from the Apple camp to Android. While it is not a contest of fanboyism, I see it as a good thing since these people will be exposed to both OS and as consumers, would be able to come up with good feedback for companies to bring their game to a higher level.

This article can be found on LifeHacker (I adore this site) and without further blabbing, here you go.

If you’re sick of going into layers and layers of navigation just to turn on your data, or just had enough of using 4 different apps to control 4 different settings, Quick Settings is for you.

Quick Settings is the swiss knife equivalent in terms of apps to do with settings. It allows users to quickly toggle between a list of settings with less than 2 swipes once set up. Let’s take an in-depth look.

Main screen of Quick Settings

Main screen shows you a list of settings that you commonly access, and the list is fully customizable even down to the ordering of settings.

Accessing Quick Settings

I’ve chosen to place Quick Settings into my status bar, allowing me to access the program by simply pulling down the menu shade. This saves me a lot of swipes just to go into the Settings pane of the phone.

Customizing Quick Settings

As you can see, Quick Settings allows you to re-order the list and to remove/add what is relevant to you. The settings included are the most common ones. The Mobile Data setting has replaced my APNDroid app, which was previously used to toggle mobile data on/off.

It also gives me the option to hide the icon on my status bar, with 3 other options on how you’ll like to toggle the app.

In my opinion this is a light-weight and well thought out app, one that should not be missed if you are on the look out for a capable app to toggle settings.

Questions for the user? Have a better app to recommend? State your thoughts in the comments box below!

P.S: I’m sorry for my erratic posting schedule as well as the absence of my paid hosting site. I’ve had some major shift in my work responsibilities and the dust has just settled, allowing me some time to work on GirlMeetsAndroid. I am working towards getting the site up and cleaning up all my posts to enjoy a brand new start there. Do continue to check back here, and please do drop a comment to say Hello!

I foresee that this phone will be able to attract the younger crowd seeking to stand out from the Blackberries and Apple iPhones. The physical qwerty keyboard also helps to give the phone a Sidekick feel.

Well I would have bought this phone if I have cash to spare and if I did not bear any hopes for Milestone. But it’s not top secret that the Milestone is set to be released sometime in March by Starhub. And I am also waiting for the fabled Nexus 2 that comes with a physical keyboard.

Well back on track, for those like me who love to read exhaustive reviews before putting money down on the line, here’s a neat little collection of all the reviews on Motorola Dext to help you make the switch:

Lester Chan MotoDext Review

Tech Goondu on Moto Dext

What you see in my post title is synonymous. Google is taking the mobile world by storm first with Android and now, the Nexus One. Competition often leads to innovative products, with consumers standing to gain with their spoils from the bloody aftermath of corporate marketing.

And right now, Nexus One is live. Currently launching in UK, US, Singapore and Hong Kong as test markets, you can purchase your very own Nexus One here, contrary to previous statements that the phone will only be available on an by-invitation basis.

On Google’s website for Nexus One, you are able to click on the icons to see how each app works as well as a 3D tour of the phone. I am most excited with the Maps app as Google flexed their prowess to show us the next level turn-by-turn navigation complete with what seems to be street view coupled with layers.

Google has organized a press conference for Nexus One, with the hardworking Engadget team updating on location. Engadget has already given us lots of yummy information where every morsel is licked clean by Android fanboys, most important being the Nexus One review.

At a glance, here’s Nexus One’s specs:

Android 2.1

11.5mm thick

512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB

5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash

HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up

3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display

Here’s a nice list of reviews from those privileged enough to give Nexus One a go (updated as and when):

A VC - Venture Capitalist and his experiences with the Google phone.

If you have access to Nexus One, please contribute your impressions in the comments!

Merry Christmas from GirlmeetsAndroid! I’ve been clearing pre-holiday work and enjoying the long weekend. Now I’m back to post on the Android. This post will be all about Singapore apps from the local developers since I’m based here. Seems like there’s not a lot of exposure to local apps so I just want to give them some exposure.

SBS Buses

(Free app, requires data connection)

This app tells you the arrival times of buses and allows you to send sms to Iris for their service arrival times. A must have for me since I commute to work by bus. 99% accurate based on my experience with it. However, it does not support SMRT buses.

Cab@SG

(Free app, no data connection required)

1 app to call them all! Cab@SG lists numbers of various cab companies and dials it for you when selected. Very handy as an all-in-one-place number directory if you don’t want to remember or store it within your phone contacts.

BBOM Usage Query

(Free app, requires data connection)

This is for Singtel users mostly. A tiny app to track your usage. After monitoring on your data counter, you can double check with this app.

ShowNearby Pathfinder

(Free app, requires data connection)

This app doesn’t not need much introduction. This app finds the nearest places of interest to your location and shows you on Google Maps. Similar to buUuk and since I did not read good reviews on Market for buUuk, I chose to review this instead.

Hope you enjoy this post as much as I had writing it.
